History

View, replay, and manage past transcriptions

Yap keeps a history of your transcriptions so you can review, copy, and replay past recordings.

Viewing History

  1. Click the History tab in Yap
  2. Browse your past transcriptions

Each history item shows:

  • Transcribed text — The result of your dictation
  • Timestamp — When the recording was made
  • Duration — Length of the recording

Actions

Copy Text

Click the Copy button to copy the transcribed text to your clipboard. Useful when auto-paste didn’t work as expected or you need the text again.

Replay Audio

Click the Play button to listen to the original recording. Helpful for:

  • Verifying transcription accuracy
  • Reviewing what you said
  • Catching missed content

Delete

Click the Delete button to remove a history item. This deletes both the transcription record and the audio file.

Show in Folder

Right-click or use the menu to reveal the audio file in Finder/Explorer. Audio files are stored as WAV format.

Storage Location

History data is stored in:

~/Library/Application Support/yap/
├── history.json # Transcription records
└── recordings/ # Audio files (WAV)

Clearing History

To delete all history:

  1. Go to History
  2. Click Clear All (or the trash icon)
  3. Confirm the deletion

Warning: This permanently deletes all recordings and transcriptions.

Privacy Considerations

  • Local storage — All history stays on your device
  • No cloud sync — Nothing is uploaded unless you use cloud transcription
  • Deletable — You can delete individual items or clear everything

If using cloud transcription, be aware that audio is sent to OpenAI for processing, but they don’t store it long-term per their data usage policy.

Tips

Managing Storage

Audio files can add up. If storage is a concern:

  • Regularly delete old recordings you don’t need
  • Or periodically clear all history

Quick Access

The History tab provides quick access to copy recent transcriptions without having to dictate again.
